From the President…
Before we get too far into the new year, I would be remiss if I failed to acknowledge the contributions of several people who made 2002 a success for the Chapter. First and foremost, we owe a great debt to the hard work and dedication of our 2002 president, Robin Spencer. She was without question the heart of the organization and showed enormous commitment throughout the year. As noted in the current edition of The Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, both Robin and past-president Barney Popkin received the Academy's Champion of Excellence Award at last year's Annual Meeting. Congratulations to both Robin and Barney! In typical form, Robin has graciously agreed to be the 2003 Programs Chair. Thank you, Robin!
I would also like to thank John Wolf for his extraordinary efforts to make the 2002 Overview Course a reality. John is our 2003 Vice President and has volunteered to spearhead the 2003 Overview Course, which we expect to offer once again in early November. Stay tuned! Thanks also to the instructors who in many cases have devoted their time for several years. In addition, I would like to acknowledge the contributions of the other Board members for their time and ongoing support.
We had a very good turnout for the annual December dinner meeting. Ivan Wong helped orchestrate a sumptuous Chinese banquet at the Restaurant Peony in Oakland. The meal was supplemented by Ivan's discussion of Chinese cuisine, culture and appropriate wine pairings. The dinner was followed by a presentation on environmental management systems by Troy Christensen of EORM. Troy offered practical insight into the implementation and effectiveness of management systems based on his many years of experience in industry. Troy is a PE, CHMM, and Regional Manager for EORM, and has agreed to be our 2003 Membership Chair. The Board also welcomes our new Regulatory Liason, David Price with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. David is a senior safety analyst and was our featured speaker at last February's meeting.
Moving forward, the Board continues to evaluate changing the Chapter to a member organization to enhance the services that the Chapter can provide. The Bylaws Committee will issue recommendations within the next several months for comment. Please also plan to join us for what I think will be a great series of events in the coming year. We will start announcing those events as soon as we can get them nailed down.
Neill Morgan-Butcher, PE, CHMM 2003 NCC-ACHMM President
