Call for Nominations for the 2003 NCC-ACHMM Board - from the President

The annual Board of Directors meeting for this chapter will be held in the middle of September.  The main purpose of the meeting is to approve a slate of officers and committee members for the 2003 Board.  I thank the members of the current Board for the energy and vigor they have brought to our agenda.  We have a new co-sponsor for the Overview Course, we are using the National Overview Course Power Point system for the November Overview Course, we have had great programs and tours, and we are making in-roads into revising the bylaws to improve the chapter.  Our “rookie” board members are Chris Dembiczak, John Wolf, Neill Morgan-Butcher, and John Barnard.  The “old-timers” are Georgina Dannatt, Barney Popkin, Jenn Coats, and yours truly.

I personally invite you to become part of the Board of Directors, either as an officer or a committee chair.  All Board members receive recertification points.  It is a good group with not too much of a time commitment.  Please consider joining the Board – the available positions are:

Vice President (president-elect)

Secretary

Treasurer

Programs Chair

Regulatory Liaison

Other Committees of your choice (!)

Thanks.  Please inform me or Neill Morgan-Butcher of you interest in joining the Board.

Robin Spencer, 2002 President

Your local chapter brought out the booth and exhibited, along with 11 vendors, at the annual PEMA Technology Trade Fair at Hs. National Committee Recruitment Announcement

The National Government Affairs committee needs people. We have several areas where your help would be most beneficial. The committee is, for description purposes, largely a virtual committee communicating through the internet and across phone conferencing meetings but you may be asked to discuss issues with your legislator or communicate the committee's activities to your chapter members. You may be asked to contribute to a legislative "How-to-Chapter" for inclusion within the chapter’s guidance manual.

Our primary goal is credential recognition with the following Sub-Committees, as focus areas: 1. Government Agencies. 2. Academic Institutions, 3. Industrial Companies/ Corporations, and  4. How-to-Impact legislation-book.

This Government Liaison person may be the chapter GA committee chair but may be another individual not attached to chapter leadership, however there are some conditions. The Institute this year through board action, I must thank Bob Teitler for his supporting efforts, voted to allow 2 CMPs a year for any individual that serves in this position. The requirements are that: 1. You must actively contribute and participate in the committee's projects, and 2. You must serve for two full years to receive any CMP credits.

This committee was a major player in the RCRA initiative, and I'm sure that you are aware of the discussions that initiative has sparked.

Have I triggered your interest, if so please contact me at my phone number, look for me at the National Conference, or ask any Academy officer or board member. Richard Cartwright is this committee’s ACHMM Board Liaison.

Thank you and I hope to be hearing from you,

Tom Brown, M. Ed., MBA, CHMM

June Program:  Talk on Brownfields and Military Base Closures

On June 25, 2002, NCC-ACHMM held a dinner meeting at the Presidio in San Francisco.  Jennifer Hernandez, from Beveridge and Diamond, spoke regarding her experiences in dealing with Brownfields and site restoration for small businesses.  She eloquently spoke about the development of the Senate Bill 32 “The California Land Environmental Restoration and Reuse Act”.  The Act seeks to; (1) authorize cities and counties to undertake investigation of small Brownfield properties that are under the Federal radar screen, (2) protect local governments, owners, occupants, and lenders with immunity for sites that have already been cleaned under Senate Bill 32, and (3) require the Cal EPA to establish more consistent and understandable guidance about clean-up levels.

Jennifer also spoke about the current status of three or four military base closures in the Bay Area.  Her talk was followed by dinner and networking with the group.  We would like to thank the people and companies that brought wine for the group to enjoy – specifically, Treadwell & Rollo, Ginny Lackner from LLNL, GEO Resources, and Barbara Maco.
