NCC-ACHMM November 2002 Newsletter
and December 2002 Meeting Announcement
A Note from the President
As my term draws to a close, I'd like to thank you all for participating in the local section activities. Even by reading these mini-newsletters you are involved! From what I observed at the National Conference in Louisville, our chapter is mature and stable and growing. Your Board is working towards gaining more recognition for the credential and giving the chapter members value in the website and chapter activities. Because we are all volunteers, we can do just so much. It is only when many do a little that we get a lot done. So, as the New Year draws closer, see if you can make NCC-ACHMM activities one of your resolutions!
We had a good turnout for the November CHMM Overview Course. Our thanks to John Wolf, CHMM and others for putting it together and to all the instructors who gave their time for its success. The next course will be at the same time next year: November 4-6, 2003, with an exam November 7th. The next CHMM exam will be January 10, 2003 and a mid-year exam is scheduled for May 30, 2003.
Our traditional members-appreciation winetasting is coming up Wednesday, December 4th at the amazingly-delicious Peony Restaurant in Oakland Chinatown. The chapter furnishes the wine and Ivan Wong will match wines to the dishes he chose and tell us about the importance of food in Chinese culture. Our technical speaker, Troy Christensen, CHMM, will speak on Environmental Management Systems. Last year we had a very successful turnout of about 50 people and had about 10 wine sponsors. If you or your company or your vendor would like to sponsor a bottle of wine for $20 or the evening for $50, we will give you the opportunity to present marketing materials and give you special recognition at the dinner.
I'd like to welcome the new Board for the year 2003:
President: Neill Morgan-Butcher
Vice-President: John Wolf
Treasurer: Georgina Dannatt
Secretary: Chris Dembiczak
Programs: Robin Spencer
Webmaster: John Barnard
Regulatory Liaison: David Price
Membership Chair: Troy Christensen
Overview Course Chair: John Wolf
Please get your reservations in early for Dec. 4th and we wish you all a very safe and happy holiday season!

Speaker Topic: Effective EHS-MS Integration An effective Environmental, Health and Safety Management System (EHS-MS) is one aspect of a company's business management system. An EHS-MS that is integrated with the organizations other business management systems (operations, purchasing, human resources, etc.) will help to eliminate redundant efforts and can increase overall company operational efficiencies. Mr. Christensen will discuss how an integrated EHS-MS:
- Provides a systematic approach to EHS management;
- Promotes sound EHS management; and
- Positions your organization as an EHS leader.
Troy Christensen is currently a Senior EHS Consultant with EORM in Sunnyvale, CA and has over ten years of experience as an engineer and consultant. He has enjoyed hands-on experience in Environmental, Health and Safety Management System, ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and BS8800 program development, implementation, and internal and external auditing for major manufacturing facilities in the US.
See you there!
NIF Tour in October was a Success
About 25 people attended the tour of the National Ignition Facility which is under construction at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The tour and science behind the project was fascinating. The NIF is noted as the world’s largest laser in the NIF literature and consists of 192 separate laser beams. The laser beams are all amplified and directed at a target the size of a bb pellet. The intense energy created will produce fusion conditions in a laboratory environment.
Once completed in 2008, the NIF will be open to both governmental and public research. Anticipated applications for use include testing for the NNSA Stockpile Stewardship Program, fusion ignition testing, and specialized scientific research. Following the tour, we enjoyed pasta at Pasta’s Trattoria in Livermore. Thanks to all who turned out for our October meeting and activity.
